Android tablet cold launches can inherit the activity’s portrait manifest lock and start in a narrow window. Remove that Android activity lock and apply the existing tablet/phone orientation policy before splash registration and activity content. Keep the 600 dp breakpoint, fold callback, configuration-change flags, and iOS policy unchanged.

Maintainer takeover of SamarpitSantoki’s #18634, preserving the original commits. The plugin also migrates an existing generated activity without duplicating the orientation call.

Validation

  • Original four plugin tests reduced to two integration tests that run Expo’s real Android mods. Exact main plugin: 0 pass / 2 fail; candidate: 2 pass. They cover manifest policy, phone/tablet runtime policy, pre-content ordering, and repeated-prebuild idempotence.
  • Mobile typecheck, scoped lint/format, fresh app prebuild, and repeated non-clean prebuild passed. After merging main 54983e3, the same two tests and mobile typecheck passed again.
  • Fresh independent Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol full-PR reviews found no confirmed code blockers. CI passes on 913f61f.
  • Fresh EAS Android development APKs: baseline 2138c8a5-7bcb-4d32-ac2d-30144c1ca76c, candidate 593eb0f0-bce1-4c26-94a0-243b110fe4b9. Both target SDK 36. Reading their actual binary manifests confirms baseline screenOrientation=portrait, candidate no orientation attribute, and identical configChanges.

Device attempt and remaining gate

EAS Android 15 / API 35, actual 720 × 1600 px and 384 dp short side. A temporary external React Native probe measured the native activity/root and called the real deriveLayout; it was not the connected account UI and did not override orientation. The identical production/minified JS bundle was prepared for both binaries. The baseline recording visibly starts in landscape Settings, force-stops/reopens the baseline native app, and ends in a portrait 384 × 853.33 dp root with compact layout.

Before — main native binary, phone cold launch

Before: Android 15 baseline native-window probe after cold launch

Baseline phone cold-launch recording: landscape Settings to portrait activity

After — candidate device verification incomplete. The first cloud connection stayed on the dev launcher, so it was stopped and reset once. The second ran the baseline probe above, then failed with Remote daemon is unavailable while enabling Developer options to establish a real tablet configuration. The EAS workflow requires stopping after a second failure. Both sessions are confirmed stopped, Metro is stopped, and all temporary source/config overlays are restored.

No candidate phone/tablet pass or before/after improvement is claimed. The profile name alone was not counted as tablet coverage. Needed before landing: candidate phone cold launch from landscape; Android 14/15 tablet landscape cold launch and portrait→landscape video; auto-rotate-on and fold/unfold checks. The controller sets display rotation with auto-rotate disabled, so the baseline video does not prove sensor behavior. This is a Debug/dev-client probe, not Release splash verification.

The author’s earlier Xiaomi Pad 6 / Android 14 results are historical evidence and must not be read as validation of this maintainer revision. This native change requires a new Android binary, not an OTA update.

Native graph provenance: baseline exact main 325a7e2 plugin over the common build inputs; candidate 2fc09ed. EAS metadata records candidate Git HEAD for both archives because the baseline used an exact main-plugin overlay. The later main merge changes neither the orientation plugin nor native dependencies/configuration nor the probe’s production layout helper; the package-file change is only its test command.

Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex in T3 Code; tests with GPT-6 Astra; independent Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol reviews.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This focused native Android fix changes the generated MainActivity orientation default and cold-launch behavior for tablets, even though the post-startup phone/tablet policy remains the same. Because it changes a production product default, the change warrants human review.

Note

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

The plugin checks cover the generated manifest and Kotlin, but the Android landscape launch is still untested. Please add before/after screenshots and a short cold-launch recording on an Android tablet, with the device and Android version, and confirm phones still launch in portrait. The verification guide requires evidence of the changed UI behavior. Please keep this in draft until that evidence is added.

📝 Walkthrough

The Android plugin removes the main activity’s manifest orientation setting and updates how it inserts orientation handling into MainActivity. Tests check the generated manifest, orientation policy, and repeated prebuild output.

Changes: Android orientation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Manifest and runtime orientation
apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.cjs, apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.test.ts
The plugin removes the main activity’s android:screenOrientation attribute. It adds orientation imports and methods when SCREEN_ORIENTATION_FULL_USER is absent, then places one applyTabletOrientation() call after the onCreate declaration. Tests check manifest configuration, the 600dp orientation policy, and stable output after repeated prebuilds.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 913f6

This change lets Android tablets launched in landscape open full screen while phones keep the portrait policy. Generated-file tests support the behavior. Device verification is still pending, but no concrete merge-blocking problem was found.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 913f6

The change is limited to Android display-orientation behavior, with no identified expansion of access or privileges. Risk is low, but device behavior and interrupted or rollback generation states remain unverified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective change reaches Android installations built with the plugin, including phones and tablets. Its demonstrated scope is activity orientation and startup timing, not expanded tenant, service, data-store, or privileged-resource access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The production transform operates on build-time manifest and activity source. The runtime decision uses device configuration to select an orientation constant; it adds no identity transition, authorization bypass, command execution path, or credential-bearing sink.

Synced from GitHub

@juliusmarminge, re your verification note:

  • Tablet cold launch, real device: tested on a Xiaomi Pad 6 (HyperOS 2.0.14.0, Android 14). Before/after screenshots of the landscape cold launch are in the description. The fixed build opens full screen with the split layout, and dumpsys activity reports areBoundsLetterboxed=false. Rotation was also checked on a Pixel Tablet emulator (Android 16).
  • Added since: 69497b0029 adds focused tests for the plugin's manifest and MainActivity output, including idempotency. Two of them fail against the plugin on main. I also ran expo prebuild for Android with this app's config against main and this branch. Only the manifest screenOrientation and the position of applyTabletOrientation() change, and a second prebuild leaves both files unchanged.
  • Still missing: the cold-launch recording and the phone check. I did not have the tablet or an Android phone/emulator for this update. The description lists the phone case to check.

Open for maintainer review: the phone launch path (the system splash may show in landscape for a moment on a phone held in landscape), the CI runs waiting for approval, and the Macroscope human-review verdict.

Assert each required configChanges flag independently.

The current contiguous-substring check depends on flag order. A harmless reorder or inserted flag can fail the test even when all required flags remain. Preserve coverage for all five flags currently asserted:

[GPT-6.1 Sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

Issue watch picked up #24448, which reports the same Xiaomi HyperOS tablet landscape cold-launch letterboxing addressed here. I found Julius's takeover note and stopped before making changes or starting device tests.

Source inspection at main commit 5b35402623d7d1d88eaa472807272a6c2e78012a confirms that apps/mobile/app.config.ts still sets orientation: "portrait", and withAndroidTabletOrientation.cjs applies its tablet override after super.onCreate(null). This PR at 913f61f46bd1b7f48855bd320c25ce88af22243b removes the manifest orientation lock and moves the runtime policy before activity creation, addressing those startup constraints.

No tests, builds, or device reproduction were run in this thread. The remaining candidate phone/tablet cold-launch verification documented in the PR body is still unproven. No competing PR will be opened for #24448.

  • chore(mobile): merge main into tablet orientation fixdc6f194

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

Merged current main (1316d48b0c68) into the original branch and pushed dc6f194db92178418f6aa34ceeb2bc4577ab0b17, preserving @SamarpitSantoki's commits and Julius's focused revision. No replacement PR. The merge was clean; no additional production changes were needed. The diff remains the orientation plugin and its two regression checks: remove the Android manifest lock and apply the existing phone/tablet policy before splash registration and activity creation. Fold handling, the 600 dp threshold, configChanges, and iOS policy remain unchanged.

Verification this run:

  • Exact current-main plugin: both existing regression checks fail (portrait manifest lock and orientation after super.onCreate).
  • Candidate: vp run check:changed passed on the task's Blacksmith worker, including format, lint, knip, mobile/scripts typechecks, and both plugin tests.
  • Two independent read-only code reviews found no concrete code issue.
  • The requested local dev server started successfully and was stopped, along with the test worker.

Still blocked: GitHub CI, Web Preview, Mobile Fingerprint Check, Mobile EAS Preview, and Deploy relay preview are action_required on this head, requiring workflow approval. Native tablet landscape cold launch, phone portrait launch, rotation lock, and fold transitions remain unverified. This VM has no attached Android device; the device tool returns Agent device access is turned off for this environment. Browser screenshots cannot establish native activity letterboxing, so no substitute evidence is claimed. Keeping the PR in draft per Julius's evidence request.
