Problem

Fixes #15195. Fixes #18762. Related to the mirror mobile failure in #10202.

After a client sends with model A, its persisted composer override keeps winning over the thread model. Another client can send with B, but the stale client's next send silently switches the thread back to A. The failure affects the model actually requested, as well as the picker.

Change

Release the composer model override after the server accepts the turn. Later display and sends then follow the server thread model. Keep text, attachments, and newer unsent model or option choices.

Web captures the choice before upload and preparation, follows draft promotion, and preserves a same-value explicit re-pick. Mobile stores a choice identifier in the draft and queued message so a newer same-value choice survives offline delivery and reload. Cleanup persists before outbox removal and retries failed writes. Archived delivery, sign-in restoration, and merge rollback keep the model and its identifier together. Receipt-only drafts remain persisted when accepted-model cleanup removes their last selector.

Scope and approval

This fixes one underlying problem across the web composer used by desktop and the native mobile composer. It adds no server protocol or provider adapter changes. The current V2 regression and expected behavior were established in maintainer triage.

New-thread global defaults remain per-client. Legacy mobile drafts and queued messages lack choice identifiers, so cleanup cannot safely distinguish an already-sent choice from a deliberate unsent choice. They are preserved. An explicit new model choice followed by an accepted send releases that override.

Verification

  • 507 tests pass in eight focused suites covering web draft state and send logic, model selection, mobile drafts, outbox delivery, permissions, serialization, and pending-message editing.
  • Web and mobile package typechecks pass. Changed-file formatting and lint pass, with existing React/compiler/schema warnings.
  • Regression controls cover empty and non-empty drafts, newer choices, rejected-send recovery, persistence failure, immediate reload, offline same-value re-picks, archived delivery, share receipts, and model/identifier rollback. In an isolated scratch copy, restoring delivery-time value-based ownership causes both same-value offline cases to fail; the different-model control passes.
  • Native iOS Simulator plus an independent browser session reproduced actual original turn models A → B → A. The patched pass used A → B → B. Unsent text remained. Remote Luna/High was both displayed in native settings and requested by the next native send.
  • With the isolated backend offline, queued a Sol send, selected Luna then Sol without sending the newer draft, cold-restarted native, and reconnected. The old message delivered with Sol. Its outbox entry was removed; the newer Sol choice identifier and unsent text remained.

Original behavior, contributor-provided desktop and phone recordings: desktop sends with Sol; mobile shows Luna and its next reply reports Luna.

Patched behavior: desktop sends with Sol; native mobile opens the same thread with Sol selected and sends with Sol without changing its model selection. Both completed server runs independently confirm gpt-6.1-sol.

The patched recordings were captured on iPhone 17 Pro Simulator, iOS 26.3. The contributor supplied the displayed original recordings. Separate original-code and patched native regression verification used the same native binary. The isolated native build needed Expo's official expo-modules-jsi 58.0.9 package for its Xcode 26 build repair; this build-only prerequisite is excluded from the patch. Screenshots are extracted from the recordings. Private environment labels are covered with opaque ffmpeg masks; no model text or selectors are edited. Idle pauses in the patched recordings are cut and final frames held for reading. Audio and personal media metadata are removed. The patched build was not manually exercised on Android or physical devices, through OpenCode, or in the Electron shell. Desktop uses the web composer covered here.

Mobile drafts and queued messages now carry model-selection IDs. Mobile delivery and successful web turns clear the selection consumed by the send while preserving newer selections. Draft persistence and cleanup also retain drafts containing imported-share receipts.

Changes

Composer model selection lifecycle

Layer / File(s)Summary
Persist model-selection identity
apps/mobile/src/state/thread-outbox-model.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/use-composer-drafts.ts
Mobile drafts and queued-message contracts include an optional model-selection ID. Draft updates, persistence, restoration, and merge rollback keep the ID paired with its selection. Drafts with imported-share IDs remain eligible for persistence when otherwise empty.
Confirm mobile delivery selections

Queued messages carry the selection ID. Delivery cleanup removes the selection only when the ID matches and flushes draft changes before outbox cleanup. Tests cover newer selections, archived drafts, persistence failures, and retry.
Confirm web selections after accepted turns

Web turn startup captures the sent draft. After a successful turn, the store clears the selection only when it matches the sent snapshot. Tests cover newer picks, failed sends, draft edits, and persistence.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to cbaae

The reviewed changes are mergeable after normal checks; no outstanding issue was established that would cause a later send to reuse a stale model choice.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c022d

The change limits cleanup to the choice consumed by an accepted send and protects newer unsent choices. No expanded access or privilege was identified. Remaining uncertainty concerns recovery after storage failures and interrupted delivery.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated change affects client-local choice persistence and subsequent model requests for a scoped thread. The inspected paths do not establish new cross-environment authority, remote entrypoints, or credential access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — User-selected model state still reaches the existing environment-scoped turn command. Mobile delivery retains the orchestration-operate scope gate and checks current model availability before sending; the new identifier controls local cleanup, not permission to invoke the command.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Within a mobile drain lifetime, accepted existing-thread messages are remembered and retry only local cleanup after a failed flush. The retry flushes before outbox removal. After restart that acknowledgment set is lost; server-side command deduplication was not verified, so end-to-end replay containment remains unconfirmed.
  • observed — Restart recovery of a delivered creation conservatively restores the queued payload to the composer rather than discarding potentially newer edits. It flushes recovered content before removal and regenerates selection identity through the settings update. This preserves recoverability but is not universal continuity of the original queued identifier.

Explanation

Issue #15195 requires the web composer to follow a remote thread model change, including a same-provider-instance change, unless this client made a newer explicit choice. The current web implementation adds startTurnWithComposerModel and confirmModelSelection, but both operate after this client receives a successful send result. The reviewed changes do not establish handling for incoming thread.model-selection-updated or thread.meta-updated changes. Therefore, the desktop draft can retain model A after another client changes the thread to model B, and a later desktop send can still use A.

Resolution

Handle remote thread model updates in the web composer. Clear or re-seed a stored non-explicit selection when the server thread model changes, and preserve a newer explicit choice from this client. Add a regression test for a same-instance remote change followed by desktop display and send.

Retry the cleared snapshot after a failed flush.

confirmModelSelection clears the in-memory selection before composerDebouncedStorage.flush(). If the storage write throws, the debounce timer is canceled and no retry runs. The previous persisted selection can then be restored after reload and affect a later send.

The debouncer retains the failed arguments, so a delayed flush() can retry the snapshot without changing accepted-turn behavior.
