fix(server, desktop): browser tools report why a page failed to load#18588
Problem
After loading https://self-signed.badssl.com/ in the Browser panel, preview_status and preview_snapshot show Chromium's error-page URL without a direct explanation of the failed navigation. Agents cannot reliably identify the failed URL and browser error from those results.
Change
Status and snapshots include an optional loadError containing the failed URL, browser error code, and description. Server-rendered tabs retain main-frame failures; desktop-rendered tabs forward failures that happen before server attachment. A new main-frame navigation clears the diagnostic, and replaced guests cannot overwrite the current tab's failure. Diagnostic URLs retain the existing data: payload redaction.
Preserves robertnisipeanu's implementation and the existing takeover work, with main merged into the branch.

Two fresh independent reviews of the complete final diff found no blocking bugs.
This changes tool output without a rendered UI change; the visual fixture matrix is empty. cannot-verify desktop: live Electron and native mobile execution were not verified on this Linux VM. Desktop attachment and guest replacement are covered by focused tests.

- fix(server, desktop): browser tools report why a page failed to loadea692c6
Approvability
Verdict: Approved at 5dbd412
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a bounded browser diagnostics fix that adds optional load-error metadata to existing status and snapshot responses, including early desktop failures. It preserves existing navigation behavior and uses backward-compatible contracts with targeted regression coverage.

📝 Walkthrough
Desktop and server preview flows now capture and relay main-frame load failures. Preview status and snapshots can include the failed URL, browser error code, and description. The flow also handles failures that occur before desktop tab registration and clears failure details when a new navigation starts.
Changes: Preview load error reporting

packages/contracts/src/desktopBrowser.ts,packages/contracts/src/previewAutomation.ts,apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.ts,apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.ts,apps/desktop/src/preview/Manager.test.tsThe contracts define load-failure events and optional load-error fields for status and snapshots. Desktop preview code retains early failures, reports failures for attached tabs, and guards against stale guests. Tests cover registration, replacement, and navigation behavior. Retain desktop failures in the server channel
apps/server/src/preview/DesktopBrowserChannel.tsThe channel stores failure details by tab, truncates stored URLs, provides a lookup, and clears the failure when the tab detaches. Expose failures in preview results

- Issue 17009: The change reports desktop load failures that can occur before registration, but does not address desktop attachment.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5dbd4
Preview diagnostics can be missing for an early desktop load failure or briefly omitted for a later failure. Resolve the first-load delivery risk before merging.
Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 30c0b
The change adds optional failure diagnostics without granting additional browser control or weakening certificate checks. Tab ownership checks limit attribution errors. Remaining uncertainty concerns diagnostic delivery during startup and recovery rather than a demonstrated security bypass.
Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The added exposure is failed-navigation diagnostic data for a selected preview tab. Existing reads permit inspecting other tabs in the same thread; the examined changes do not introduce cross-thread selection or additional browser-control authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- observed — Navigation targets can influence the reported URL. In the examined flow, URL, code, and description remain diagnostic output; they are not used to execute commands, grant browser control, or alter certificate policy. No introduced attack path was established through these consumers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The server accepts failure reports through its existing desktop event stream. Attribution relies on desktop ownership checks and thread/tab keys; the new event carries no navigation command or additional privilege.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred — Diagnostic recovery is not proven lossless. If a failure is published before the event-stream subscription exists, later announcement replays attachment only. Process-spawner subscription ordering remains unresolved, so this is a possible omission of diagnostics, not an established security-control failure.

Fresh review confirms both older findings are withdrawn and do not apply: the browser event subscription precedes server-created tabs, and loadErrorOf follows the existing Playwright Promise-to-Effect boundary. Resolving those two threads.
