Problem

Selecting a model on a phone can leave the same thread on desktop or web showing a different model. Sending from that stale client can overwrite the choice and trigger an unintended provider handoff.

Change

Save the full thread model selection when the picker changes and reconcile it through the existing shared shell state. Ordinary sends inherit the server selection. Local new-thread drafts keep their existing behavior.

Apply provider session transitions when execution starts so selecting a model does not interrupt an active turn. Accepted queued runs and previously persisted mobile outbox entries retain their captured model without resetting the picker. Failed selection saves roll back and require a successful reselection before sending.

Scope and approval

This addresses one cross-client thread-selection inconsistency across the shared runtime, server, web/desktop composer, and mobile composer. No prior maintainer approval or triaged issue is linked.

Verification

  • 439 tests passed across 11 focused suites, covering selection reconciliation, save/send ordering, denied and failed saves, stale mobile sends, option defaults and memory, queued selections, and provider session restarts.
  • 837 tests passed across 48 affected web suites, including all 43 suites that previously failed during module initialization.
  • 87 tests passed across four focused server suites, including prepared-run session cleanup, same-model session reuse, later picker changes, queued runs, and provider handoffs. The new cleanup regressions fail on the prior commit.
  • Scoped TypeScript checks passed for server, web, mobile, client-runtime, and contracts. Changed-file lint and formatting checks passed, with existing lint warnings.
  • Live browser/mobile verification and recording remain outstanding. T3 preview reported no automation host, and device access was disabled. No screenshots or recordings are attached.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable β€” This PR changes shared model-selection persistence, authorization checks, send/outbox behavior, and provider-session lifecycle across web, mobile, and server code. Its cross-cutting runtime and auth impact is too substantial for automatic approval.

Thread model selection now belongs to the thread for server-backed conversations. Client commands save and synchronize selections, composers use them when starting runs, and orchestration plans provider sessions from the selected model.

Changes

Thread Model Selection

Layer / File(s)Summary
Guarded selection commands and synchronization
packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/operations/*, packages/client-runtime/src/state/*
Guarded commands save thread selections and track save failures. Sends wait for selection synchronization, and the dispatch contract can preserve a selection captured by the client outbox.
Composer selection and permission handling
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadComposer.tsx, apps/mobile/src/state/*, apps/web/src/components/ChatView*, apps/web/src/components/chat/*, apps/web/src/state/use-thread-model-selection.ts
Composers read and save server-thread selections, omit model selections from existing-thread sends, and disable controls when selection is not permitted. Provider resolution uses the thread’s saved provider instance.
Model-state precedence and sticky options
apps/web/src/composerDraftStore.ts, apps/web/src/composerDraftStore.test.ts, apps/web/src/modelSelection.test.ts
A saved thread selection takes precedence over draft and project model state. Sticky options are remembered and cleared per provider instance and model.
Run selection planning and preservation
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EffectOutbox.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EffectWorker.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts
Queued and immediate run startup plan selection transitions and provider-session changes. Steering and follow-up dispatches can preserve the saved selection.
Selection and session integration coverage
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/SelectionRestart.integration.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadModelSelection.integration.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/*
Integration tests cover selection changes during active runs, queued-message selection, later selection inheritance, and provider-session replacement behavior.

Merge Risk: βšͺ Minimal Β· up to c4c83

This change syncs thread model selections across clients and applies provider session transitions when execution starts. No actionable merge-blocking issue was found in the supplied context. Live browser and mobile verification is still outstanding.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to 95541

The inspected server-side authorization remains intact, and ordinary sends use the shared thread selection instead of stale local choices. No introduced security flaw was established. Interrupted provider transitions, final cleanup failures, and mixed-version behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred β€” The security-sensitive outcome is which configured provider instance executes a thread or captured queued run. The inspected external command path requires an authenticated session with orchestration-operate authority; tenant-wide, data-store, and deployment-wide exposure were not established by this review.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred β€” The preservation flag can bypass the new client-local failed-save check, but that is not an established authorization bypass: server scope enforcement still applies, and explicit run selections were already accepted at the PR base. The checked mobile caller pairs the flag with a captured queued selection. No introduced privilege gain was established from this exception.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed β€” Client guarding is incremental, not the authoritative security boundary. The server authenticates the WebSocket session and checks its scopes before each RPC handler. Commands exempted from the client helper still receive the server dispatchCommand requirement of orchestration:operate.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed β€” Command commit atomically records events, applies projections, enqueues effects, and updates the receipt before publication. The outbox orders lifecycle effects per thread and supports cancellation and retry. After process loss, detachment is replay-safe while turn starts and steering are classified as process-bound and cancelled. These controls support containment, but do not prove complete external provider cleanup.

Release replacement sessions before starting prepared runs.

For defer_start, the dispatch path skips the detach effects. dispatchPreparedRunRelease then marks the run as starting and enqueues only provider-turn.start. The provider session service opens the run's replacement session without releasing the previous session. A deferred restart_and_resume run can therefore start while the old session remains live.

Ensure the prepared run retains and releases switchPlan.releaseProviderSessionIds before enqueueing provider-turn.start.

Note

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

The picker synchronization and failed-save controls change the web and mobile UI, but the PR explicitly leaves live verification outstanding and includes no screenshots or recording. The verification policy requires before/after images and a short recording for this cross-client interaction. Closing for missing evidence. Show a selection syncing between clients and the failed-save/send behavior, then request reconsideration.
