fix(web): numbered composer lists nest and lift correctly#17138
Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#17124
Tab on a numbered composer item now nests it under the item above at that item's Markdown content column. The child is numbered from 1, or continues an existing nested sibling, and the caret stays on its text. In the plain composer, Shift+Enter on an empty nested item moves it out one level and renumbers the parent list; a further press leaves the list. The earlier description's verification and evidence sections describe older heads and committed fixtures that are gone, so the description is kept below and in full.
Original description by @michal-billtech
Problem
Typing 1. first, Shift+Enter, Tab, and nested in either web composer mode kept the outer item number and inserted only two spaces. The sent Markdown rendered as a flat list. Shift+Enter on an empty nested item in the plain composer also left the list instead of lifting one level.
Change
Tab aligns children with their parent's Markdown content column and starts or continues the child numbering while preserving the caret. Empty nested items lift one level before leaving the list. The backward scan respects multiline mention chips and tab-separated markers.
Reuses #17138, preserving @michal-billtech's commits and adapting the fix to current main's caret and renumbering helpers.
Scope and approval
Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/17124
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. The change is confined to the shared web/desktop composer helper and its focused regressions. Shift+Tab retains its existing shortcut.
The original's Verification and Evidence sections: full original description.
Takeover
Taken over from @michal-billtech, whose first commit and approach (nest to the parent's content column, lift empty nested items) are kept.
- Content columns now come from
parseListMarkerfor every marker type, parent and sibling matching compares visual column width (tabs and spaces alike), and lifting into an ordered parent renumbers that list's later items with the existingrenumberFollowingItems. - Tests cut to 7 cases in
composer-list-continuation.test.ts, each failing on main; the user guide's Shift+Enter line now mentions the one-level lift. - Dropped the committed evidence fixtures
scripts/fixtures/issue-17124/and their knip entry; no test read them.

Verification log
- Review round 1: reviewer A (Codex gpt-6.1-sol) MERGE, reviewer B (Claude Opus 5.5) MERGE; no confirmed bugs. Both asked for the tab-separated parent and multiline-chip Tab cases, which were added. Noted and left as on main: Tab stops at continuation prose or a blank line and falls back to two spaces; Tab does not renumber the outer list.
- Tests:
composer-list-continuation.test.ts18 on main → 25 (7 takeover cases, all red against main's helper).vp run check:changedgreen on 2adebedc7d. - Proof audit: pass 1 matrix of 14 rows (matrix); pass 2 found A, B, I capture defects and a wrong J expectation; A, B, I recaptured and J reworded; the auditor's independent rebuild of rich A matched to zero pixels.
- Not exercised: the ordinary Submit/provider turn for the sent-message rows (seeded through RPC into the real renderer). Native mobile does not use this helper; desktop wraps the same web code.
- CI: fork head; GitHub CI may await approval.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at 0b4e119
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused composer bug fix that corrects Markdown list nesting and caret placement for Tab and nested empty-item handling. Runtime changes are confined to list editing, with targeted tests covering ordered, bullet, task, multi-level, and fallback cases.

Walkthrough
The composer now uses preceding list markers to indent numbered items with Tab and to lift empty nested items with Enter. Tests cover nested numbering, parent-list renumbering, and caret placement.

Tab nesting remains incorrect when a numbered parent has a continuation line. This is a bounded limitation that can be accepted for merge or addressed before merging.

Explanation
Whole-PR diff (base becf853d to head 9b9c0c88) changes only apps/web/src/composer-list-continuation.ts and its test file. Requirements from
#17124and the code that meets them:- Tab nests an ordered item at the parent content column. listIndentForTab takes indent from the parent's contentColumn (computed in parseListMarker and contentColumn()). "1. " gives 3 columns and "10. " gives 4. Tests cover "1. parent\n2. child" to "1. parent\n 1. child" and "10. parent\n11. child" to "10. parent\n 1. child".
- A first nested child starts at 1. nestedNumber() returns "1" when no previous child exists.
- An existing nested sibling continues its numbering. previousChild logic plus nestedNumber() return "2" in the test "1. parent\n 1. first\n2. second".
- Caret stays on the item text. cursorAfter is computed for both indent and marker cases. The test checks cursorAfter.
- Shift+Enter on an empty nested item lifts one level. listContinuationForEnter() uses parentMarker() and nextMarkerText(parent). The test "1. parent\n 1. child\n 1. " yields " 2. ", then "2. ", then an empty line.
- Top-level empty items still exit the list. With no parent, the replacement is empty, as before.
- Parent numbering after a lift is corrected. renumberFollowingItems() is applied. The test "1. a\n 1. \n2. b" yields "1. a\n2. \n3. b" with the caret at the new marker. I traced this case by hand and it matches.
- Fallback. When no parent exists, the two-space insertion is kept.
- Both composer modes. The issue states both modes route Tab through listIndentForTab. That call path is outside this diff. The function signature is unchanged in the diff, so existing callers still apply.
- Shift+Tab is a proposed option that the issue asks the maintainer to decide. The issue states that Shift+Enter gives the way out. The PR keeps the existing Shift+Tab shortcut, so this is not a required item.
Unresolved points (not issue requirements): the PR description cites regression tests for bullets, tasks, tab-separated markers, and multiline mention chips. The test diff at this head covers ordered cases only. Tab on a line that is already deeper than the item above falls back to two spaces. I did not run the test suite. Verdicts rest on code reading and the test expectations.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff contains two files: composer-list-continuation.ts and composer-list-continuation.test.ts. No fixture, Knip, README, or ChatComposer file appears in this diff. Earlier fixture-only commits were dropped, as shown by commit be140fe. The changes map to
#17124:- parseListMarker and contentColumn(): compute content columns for Tab nesting. Task regex group indexes shift, but task matching is unchanged.
- indentWidth(line, fromColumn): tab-stop handling used by contentColumn. The default call is unchanged.
- listMarkersAbove, parentMarker, nestedNumber, listIndentForTab: Tab nesting and sibling numbering.
- listContinuationForEnter and renumberFollowingItems: empty-item lift and parent renumbering.
- Tests: cover the new Tab and Enter behavior.
Bullet and task items share the parser path. The issue states bullet indent is unaffected, and the fallback keeps two spaces for those cases. No unrelated file or behavior change appears in the diff. The earlier assessment cited ChatComposer cursor propagation and documentation changes. Neither appears in the reviewed whole-PR diff, so they do not count as changes here.

- fix(fixtures): make composer list evidence paths portableac810c1
The fixture portability finding is fixed in ac810c1f08: the runtime import is relative, the README accepts a checkout path, and thread creation receives that path explicitly. Syntax, lint, formatting, targeted Knip and path-resolution checks pass. Composer runtime bytes are unchanged. The continuation-line example uses the same two-space fallback on both this PR and main 044f07257c. That pre-existing limitation was reviewed and remains outside this focused nesting and empty-item lifting fix.
