feat(web): make terminal close confirmation optional#16615

Terminal close actions always prompted, even for users who prefer closing terminals immediately.

Adds Terminal close confirmation under Settings → General → Confirmations. It stays enabled by default and can be disabled, searched for, or reset. The shared confirmation helper applies the preference to drawer and panel buttons, terminal tabs, and the terminal close keybinding on web and desktop.

Watch the demo video (23 seconds): default confirmation → disable the setting → close a terminal immediately.

Default confirmationSetting disabledTerminal closed without a prompt
Default close confirmationTerminal close confirmation disabledTerminal closed immediately

Validation: 231 focused tests passed; web and contracts typechecks passed; scoped lint passed with warnings in existing SettingsPanels code. Verified in the real web client that disabled confirmation survives a reload and resetting the preference restores the dialog. Desktop uses the same helper; mobile currently has no equivalent user-triggered terminal close confirmation. No server, provider, or wire behavior changed.

Model: gpt-6.1-sol. Harness: Codex in T3 Code.

🟡 Medium lib/terminalCloseConfirm.ts:20

Immediately after reload, a persisted confirmTerminalClose: false is treated as true, so the first close action opens the destructive confirmation dialog despite the user's saved opt-out. getClientSettings() returns schema defaults until asynchronous settings hydration completes; await hydration, with an intentional fallback policy, before reading this preference.

Fixed in f29ad8636c. Terminal close now waits for client settings hydration before reading the preference, with pending state covering the hydration wait. If saved settings cannot be loaded, it retains the destructive confirmation. Added regression tests for delayed hydration of a saved opt-out and storage failure; 25 focused tests, web typecheck, and scoped lint pass.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a persisted setting that can suppress confirmation before terminal processes are stopped and changes bulk right-panel closes to prompt by default. It establishes a product-level default and alters an existing close path, so the scope warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a client setting for terminal-close confirmation, enabled by default. Terminal-close requests use the hydrated setting to decide whether to show the confirmation dialog. General settings provides a switch and reset action, and settings search includes the preference.

Changes: Terminal Close Confirmation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Settings contract
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts
ClientSettingsSchema defaults confirmTerminalClose to true. ClientSettingsPatch accepts the optional Boolean field. Tests cover the default and preservation of an explicit false.
Terminal-close confirmation gate

The close flow hydrates settings before deciding whether to show the dialog. It skips the dialog when confirmation is disabled and continues to confirmation if hydration or settings access fails. Tests cover these outcomes and pending dialogs.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1bad5

Bulk-closing right-panel tabs can stop terminal processes and delete their history without the confirmation users are told to expect when the preference is enabled. Align the bulk-close flow with the preference, or explicitly narrow the setting’s scope, before relying on it as protection.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1bad5

The change is limited to a client-side preference. Confirmation remains enabled by default, settings-read failures retain the prompt, and disabling it does not grant permission to operate terminals. No new security issue was established, although some persistence and recovery behavior remains unverified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The preference belongs to the client rather than a selected server environment. Disabling it can remove prompts for terminal actions across that client's connected environments, but the inspected execution paths retain their existing environment, thread, terminal identity, and permission checks. The destructive outcome remains process shutdown and terminal-history deletion.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Auto-exit and bulk terminal closes bypass the individual confirmation helper, and the helper also permits closure when no local API is available. These exceptions predate this PR; the new preference does not introduce those paths. They are not retained as PR-introduced security concerns.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Failed settings reads remain retryable and reject hydration. The close helper catches that rejection while keeping confirmation enabled; it does not interpret a storage-read failure as permission to skip the prompt.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged server close operation uses a per-thread locking wrapper. Session removal publishes a closed event only when a session was removed, and history deletion uses forced file removal. These existing mechanisms constrain repeated-close cleanup, but the inspection does not establish comprehensive crash recovery or interleaved reopen behavior.

Apply terminal confirmation to bulk tab closes.

When a user selects Close others, Close to right, or Close all, the shared bulk-close flow can call closeTerminalMutation(... deleteHistory: true ...) without calling confirmTerminalClose. The default-enabled setting therefore does not protect these terminal sessions.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @jakeleventhal

All bulk-close paths now confirm selected terminal labels as well as browser tabs before removing surfaces or terminal history.

Verified in 1e0c04d4d177857ea5e8c11c2dc416b6be88372d. Focused source tests passed (3 files); base ancestry and product diff recorded. No interactive browser or phone verification was performed for this source update.

@jakeleventhal Thanks for confirming the fix in 1e0c04d4d177857ea5e8c11c2dc416b6be88372d. The reported change addresses this finding: bulk-close paths now require terminal and browser confirmations before removing surfaces or terminal history.
