Problem

Fixes #16023.

A .dng photo cannot be attached at all. Browsers label DNG files inconsistently: as image/tiff (rejected as an unsupported image), as image/png/image/jpeg (sent down the image compression path, which would destroy the raw data), or with an empty/octet-stream type. Expected: a DNG attaches as an ordinary file and the original bytes reach the agent, even if nothing can preview it.

Change

  • composerAttachmentFiles.ts: isDngFile recognizes a case-insensitive .dng extension or the DNG MIME types (image/dng, image/x-dng, image/x-adobe-dng) and classifies the file as a generic file before HEIC and image inference. Captioned DNG pastes are claimed instead of falling through to the text paste.
  • New composerFileAttachmentMimeType derives the MIME recorded on a generic file's draft/wire record. For a DNG it returns image/x-adobe-dng (a conventional, not IANA-registered, type), so a browser-reported image/png on a .dng is never re-read as a picture downstream by isImageAttachment or counted toward the provider image byte budget in getProviderAttachmentLimitError. Non-DNG files keep the existing derivation (video extension inference, octet-stream fallback).
  • ChatComposer.tsx: the generic-file staging branch uses that helper instead of its inline derivation.

Only DNG is handled; this does not broaden to every RAW format. Web and desktop share this composer; native mobile pickers are unchanged and out of scope.

Scope and approval

Focused fix for the open bug report #16023, limited to the composer classification and staging path. Supported images, HEIC, SVG/TIFF rejection, document text paste, and the generic-file capability/size gates keep their existing behavior (covered by the existing and new tests).

Verification

  • node_modules/.bin/vp test run apps/web/src/components/chat/composerAttachmentFiles.test.ts --maxWorkers=1: 44 passed (new cases: nine browser MIME labels route to file; MIME-only DNG without extension; captioned paste claimed; original bytes, name and lastModified preserved through the MIME-rewriting staging wrapper; downstream imageMimeType/isImageAttachment/getProviderAttachmentLimitError treat the record as a file; other RAW formats and .dng.png/.dng.tif names unchanged; PDF/zip/mov wire MIME unchanged).
  • node_modules/.bin/vp lint on the three changed files: exit 0 (only the pre-existing ChatComposer React Compiler warnings, identical to main).
  • node_modules/.bin/tsc --noEmit -p apps/web/tsconfig.json: exit 0.
  • An independent, separately written holdout test (not committed) exercising the same behaviors fails 29 assertions on main and passes 46/46 with this change.
  • Not checked: a live browser/Electron session with a real camera DNG, and the server upload round trip; the staged File is passed through unchanged by the upload queue, which this change does not touch.

Implemented with Claude Code (Claude Fable 5.1); independently reviewed by Codex (gpt-6.1-sol) before submission.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ecada07

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped web bug fix that routes only DNG originals through the existing generic-file upload path, preserving their bytes and preventing image processing. It adds focused coverage for browser MIME variants, paste behavior, downstream classification, and unaffected formats without changing APIs, defaults, or infrastructure.

DNG files are classified as generic attachments and assigned a canonical MIME type. DNG pastes are handled as attachments even when clipboard text is present. ChatComposer uses a shared MIME helper for file attachments.

Pasting a DNG with a caption can silently discard the caption. Fix that path and test the composer’s MIME staging before merging; the impact is narrow and recoverable.

Preserve clipboard text when staging a DNG.

When a .dng file has a generic MIME type such as application/octet-stream and the clipboard contains nonempty text/plain, this branch claims the paste. onComposerPaste prevents the default action, stages only the files, and returns before handling the text. The caption is discarded. Stage the DNG and pass the text through the composer text path as well.

Assert the MIME selected by ChatComposer staging.

This test calls composerFileAttachmentMimeType and re-wraps the File itself; it does not exercise ChatComposer’s staging loop. Reverting that caller to its previous MIME expression can leave these assertions green. For a .DNG reported as image/png, the old expression can stage mimeType: "image/png", which makes isImageAttachment treat the type: "file" record as an image. Add a focused assertion through the staging caller that the staged attachment uses DNG_FILE_MIME_TYPE and remains an isFileAttachment.

Re the "preserve clipboard text when staging a DNG" note: this is the existing behavior for every claimed paste, not something this change introduces. onComposerPaste already prevents the default action and stages only the files for any paste that shouldHandleComposerAttachmentPaste claims, which today includes every supported or unsupported image pasted alongside caption text (ChatComposer.tsx, the files.length > 0 && … shouldHandleComposerAttachmentPaste branch, unchanged in this PR). The DNG branch deliberately mirrors that image treatment because, from the user's point of view, a DNG is a photo; letting it fall through to the text paste would silently drop the file instead.

Routing clipboard text through the composer text path for claimed pastes would change behavior for all image pastes too, so it belongs in its own PR rather than this focused DNG fix. Happy to open that as a follow-up if maintainers want it.

Could a maintainer confirm the DNG exception to the intentional unsupported-image rejection policy? #16023 has no maintainer decision, and the related SVG triage says generic-file exceptions need a product call. This PR makes that exception for DNG and claims captioned DNG pastes as files; its classification and byte-preservation tests are useful, but do not settle that direction. Please link the approved DNG scope under the prior-approval rule. Leaving it open for that decision.

Taking over this one. I’ll reduce the tests to the useful coverage, update the implementation against current main, and verify it before publishing the changes.

Thanks @shelomo for identifying the DNG classification and canonical-MIME fix. Rebuilt against current main in #24625, where attachment intake now lives in a hook, with reduced tests, legacy-draft reattachment compatibility, and independent browser/upload proof. Compared the original diff with the replacement: DNG extension/MIME classification, canonical file MIME, and captioned-paste handling are all retained; no intended behavior was omitted.
