Current verification

Integrated main 793bbf47b3b319e22a774f37f6b19d43fbc453a6 while preserving the existing PR history. At 134cbf9b5928707197979876eef38d3463f6ffd0, vp run check:changed against that main revision passed 436 selected tests, compiler checks, affected package types, formatting, lint, unused-code and applicable dependency/schema checks.

Hosted CI and reviews must be assessed at this head. No integrated web/desktop or native-client pass was performed in this update. Earlier verification and media below retain their stated historical revisions; existing proposal and approval requirements remain as described below.

Current authorization follows main: standard pairings include access:write, so plugin installation and settings mutations are available to those sessions. Earlier traces that describe standard pairings as view-only predate that scope change. Mobile continues to expose its deliberately read-only plugin screens.

Compatibility update and verification: GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex harness through T3 Code.

Historical implementation and evidence

Model: Claude Opus 5.5. Rebased onto current main with Claude Opus 5.5 on 2026-10-12.

Originally stacked on #16044 and #15010. The current base is main: review the complete contribution, including the inherited panel registry and host context, panel migrations and Pi contribution-status channel.

Historical status at c467a0b

Compiler and test compatibility repair at c467a0b:

  • Migrated eight suites from the removed react-test-renderer package to React DOM and real button interactions. Moved those suites and four existing DOM suites to the browser project, preserving Files late-action and navigation coverage.
  • Removed three manual memoization calls so React Compiler owns memoization. Replaced device try/finally with promise cleanup while retaining the async boundary and the original thread-scoped state handling. Fixed the terminal mock's accidental promise-like then property.
  • Focused proof: 12 suites / 50 tests passed using a compiler-enabled jsdom fallback; 14 focused compiler checks passed (1,013 unrelated cases skipped). After retaining the device handler's async boundary, its seven interaction tests and compiler check passed again. Web tsc-rs --noEmit -p apps/web/tsconfig.json, lint and format on 15 files, and diff checks passed. Lint retains an inherited array-index-key warning in a test stub.
  • Native Chromium verification remains blocked. The local native command stops during configuration loading because existing dependencies lack @vitest/browser-playwright; no installation was performed. The fallback excludes the browser-profile interaction test and supplies scratch-only getAnimations/scrollIntoView shims. Local Node 24.12 is below the declared ^24.13.1 workspace range.
  • Previous head 06c8449 failed Build and Typecheck, Test Web, Lint and aggregate Check. On the current head, Build and Typecheck, Lint, Test, Release Smoke, Rust and all eight server shards pass. Test Web still aborts with an unhandled Vitest mock-factory rejection: the nested cause repeats the wrapper without exposing the underlying module or exception. Aggregate Check fails as a result. A later native-fingerprint run passed after an earlier cancelled run. The missing local browser provider prevents matching focused Chromium reproduction; an equipped run that exposes the underlying mock exception is still needed. No local tests, dependency installs, CI retries or source changes were performed in this status follow-up. Historical checks and captures below were not rerun for this compatibility follow-up.
  • CodeRabbit is paused; its last reviewed commit is b55a050, so its retained clean summary does not cover the current head. Previous inline findings were fixed or explicitly withdrawn; this update adds no new actionable finding. Fresh independent review was skipped because recovery instructions prohibit delegates. Git hooks are unavailable in the non-Git source fixture; explicit focused lint and format checks passed.
  • Maintainer approval for the status-channel direction and inherited panel architecture remains outstanding. The PR stays open and unmerged.

Historical integration notes

Rebased 2026-10-10 onto #15010's current head (1fe8efd69a, on main 57b3780770). Main split permissions (#9786-#9791, #10298). subscribeContributionStatus stays on orchestration:read because statuses are thread-header data next to the thread projection, while resource telemetry keeps main's diagnostics:read. Main's Pi adapter now also treats an interrupted post-fork get_state as a failure (#15571), so the layer's status invalidation runs on Effect.onError instead of tapError. Main also moved RPC observation into the central instrumentation map, so the new stream handler no longer wraps itself in observeRpcStream and is registered there under the server aggregate. The authorization test expects main's new requiredPermission field. The follow-up commits in this PR answer review-bot findings; GPT-6.1 Sol (high) reviewed them too: SHIP. Main moved the Pi adapter into its own @t3tools/provider-pi package (#17302), and provider packages may not import the server. The contribution status store therefore moves to @t3tools/provider-core/server/ContributionStatusStore, next to the other provider-shared services, and the server keeps the subscribeContributionStatus RPC and provides the same layer to both the adapters and the WebSocket stream. The Pi adapter now yields the store inside makePiAdapterV2, matching main's adapter factories (#17381). The status markers for a rollback fork were folded into main's new rollback barrier (#13839), including restoring statuses when Pi refuses the fork. The adapter tests moved with the adapter into packages/provider-pi. Main now requires focus rings to stay inside their element so an ancestor cannot clip them (#16675). An inset ring on the thread status button itself would sit under its opaque status badges and vanish, so the button draws its keyboard focus ring on an inset overlay above the badges, the same way main's stash menu does. GPT-6.1 Sol (high) reviewed this port: SHIP. Captures below were taken at the revisions they name. At historical revision (890b0c5769) these pass: focused tests (8 files, 137 tests), typecheck (t3, @t3tools/web, @t3tools/client-runtime, @t3tools/contracts, @t3tools/provider-core, @t3tools/provider-pi), lint and fmt on the changed files, knip.

Cancelled rollback in a real client (2026-10-07, revision 401ecf14a3, which contains this PR, web client, real Pi with a small test extension, GPT-6 Astra): statuses before the rollback, then the rollback the extension refuses, with the statuses still shown afterwards: light-before-rollback · light-refused-statuses-restored · dark-statuses-restored · dark-refused-statuses-restored · video (the video joins two recordings; there is a gap between the in-flight rollback and the final error).

Problem

Pi extensions report short status lines with ctx.ui.setStatus (for example a plan/build mode or a watcher state). In Pi's own terminal UI those appear in the footer. In T3 Code they are dropped: a Pi thread shows nothing, and the docs say status lines "do not have a T3 Code equivalent". Users running Pi extensions lose the one hint the extension uses to say what it is doing.

Scope and approval

This is the proposal route in CONTRIBUTING. It follows Ideas discussion #6837 (Pi-style extension API: hooks, UI contributions, settings) and the agent status line request #14557; a dedicated "show Pi setStatus on the thread" Ideas post is the natural place to agree it. No maintainer has agreed to this direction yet. The current contribution includes the inherited panel layers, including the Files panel late-action fix from #16044. The Pi mobile renderer would follow as a separate PR on top of this one. This direction still needs a maintainer decision.

Change

  • Contract (packages/contracts/src/contributionStatus.ts): a bounded, advisory status entry per thread and source (key ≤ 64, text ≤ 80, tooltip ≤ 240, ≤ 8 items per source), a subscribeContributionStatus stream that sends full snapshots, and an optional contributionStatus environment capability. Unknown tones decode as neutral; unknown source kinds and malformed entries drop per entry.
  • Server: ContributionStatusStore keeps statuses in memory, owned by the producing provider session, normalizes text to one plain line (ANSI stripped, controls collapsed, truncated without splitting surrogate pairs), and enforces count caps. Nothing is persisted or event-sourced. The Pi adapter forwards extension_ui_request setStatus, clears statuses at T3-initiated switch_session / new_session / fork, and unbinds on failed registration; closing the session clears them.
  • Authorization: the stream is registered in the RPC group's scope middleware at orchestration read scope, like the other read streams. No per-handler check.
  • Client: client-runtime atoms subscribe only when the server advertises the capability. The web/desktop thread header shows the first two statuses as chips and a "+N" count; click, tap, Enter or hover opens a list with every status's full text and its origin ("From a Pi extension. It can lag a session change.").
  • Docs: docs/user/providers-pi.md says where extension statuses appear and that they can lag a session change.

Verification

Environment: macOS arm64. Captured with this PR's change applied directly on upstream main eac52f0087 (before = that main, after = main plus this PR). The change has since been restacked unchanged (identical patch) onto the previous PR in this stack. Each revision ran from its own checkout with fresh isolated state. Pi 1.0.0 (@earendil-works/pi-coding-agent), model "Pi default" (local Ollama llama3.2:3b configured; no model call needed). A small test extension calls real ctx.ui.setStatus: on session_start it sets mode ("● plan mode", ANSI green), watch and lint; the extension command /demo-status replace changes mode to "● build mode"; /demo-status clear clears lint by setting it to empty. Headless Chromium at 1440×900, light/dark via prefers-color-scheme; the built Electron app (vp run build:desktop) ran with an isolated profile and T3 home.

Repro: enable Pi with launch arguments --extension <status-demo-extension.ts>, open a Pi thread, send /demo-status set, open the chips, send /demo-status replace, then /demo-status clear, then run Cmd+K → Restart agent session (stops the provider session).

Show, open, replace, clear one key, stop session (web, dark, real time, GIF 10 fps):

Before (main): the commands complete, but nothing appears in the header.

Before: the Pi extension's status commands complete with no header chips

After (this PR): chips appear beside the title, the popover lists every status, a replacement updates the chip, clearing lint removes it and the "+1", and restarting the session clears all chips.

After: Pi statuses appear as chips, open in a list, update, clear one key, and disappear when the session stops

Header detail from the same recording:

After: header chips and the open status list

Full-resolution MP4s: before, after (real time, 1440×900, ~14 s each).

Chips are ordered by status key (the server sorts them), so with lint, mode and watch the header shows lint, ● plan mode and "+1", and watch is in the list. ANSI colors are stripped to plain text.

Remote browser (vp run dev --share, a fresh unpaired browser over the tailnet, same patch on upstream main): statuses showed after /demo-status set. With the browser offline for 10 s and back online, the chips stayed and a later /demo-status replace updated them over the new socket. A full page reload with no new command restored lint, ● build mode and "+1" from the server's snapshot.

Historical checks at ac6e98fdfd, re-run 2026-10-05 (CI=true, all exit 0):

  • vp test run on the 8 focused files (contracts, store, RPC stream, Pi adapter, RPC authorization, client-runtime atoms, web chip logic, web chip interaction): 8 files, 95 tests pass. Recorded on the same patch on upstream main, before the restack: with the production files reverted to main, 7 of the 8 files fail and the unchanged authorization test passes.
  • The RPC stream test serves the method through the real server RPC group and its scope middleware. A client with only a lower scope is refused before the handler runs; an orchestration-read client receives the snapshot, replacements, and a fresh snapshot on resubscribe. Registering the method at the wrong scope fails both tests (recorded before the restack).
  • vp run --filter typecheck for @t3tools/contracts, @t3tools/client-runtime, t3 and @t3tools/web; vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives and vp fmt --check on the touched files (the only lint warnings are on unchanged lines that warn on main too); vp run knip:check; web build; vp run build:desktop; node scripts/release-smoke.ts. All pass.

Surfaces

  • Entry points: the thread header only. No settings, command palette or keybinding; statuses are display hints with no action.
  • Clients: web and desktop (same renderer). Mobile: not in this PR; a follow-up PR adds the iOS/Android renderer. Old mobile builds never subscribe.
  • Providers: Pi produces statuses. Codex, Claude, Cursor, Grok, OpenCode and Antigravity have no setStatus equivalent: not applicable, nothing changes for them.
  • Contracts: new stream method, schemas and an optional capability. New client + old server: no capability, no subscription, nothing shown. Old client + new server: never calls the method.
  • Reverse states: an extension clears a key by setting empty text; session stop, a T3-initiated session switch, or a failed registration clears or unbinds them; a server restart starts empty. A rollback that an extension cancels keeps the session, so it puts back the statuses the store held, without replacing keys written or cleared while the hook decided. The kept copy is dropped as soon as Pi answers the fork.
  • Connection modes: the stream crosses the wire like other read streams and works over local, direct remote, relay and tunnel connections. Frames are full snapshots bounded by count caps.
  • Docs: docs/user/providers-pi.md updated.

Not verified

  • Mobile (iOS/Android): not in this PR; no capture.
  • Captures stopped the session with "Restart agent session"; session switch, fork and failed registration clearing are covered by adapter tests only. The cancelled-rollback restore was captured in a real web client (see the top of this description).
  • Statuses written by an old Pi session after T3's switch marker cannot be told apart from the new session's on the current Pi protocol and may persist until the extension updates that key. Extension-initiated switches or reloads get no automatic clearing. The popover says statuses can lag a session change.
  • CI replays recorded Pi RPC records; the live runs above used Pi 1.0.0 only.

Historical implementation/proof: Claude Opus 5.5 (build), GPT-6.1 Sol (review) and GPT-6 Astra (captures) via T3 Code. Current compatibility follow-up: GPT-6.1 Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code; no fresh independent review. 🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Walkthrough

The changes add a server contribution-status store and WebSocket subscription, client state and status chips in server-thread headers. They also move right-panel surfaces into a typed registry and use a shared host context for panel state and scoped operations.

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge, bil0000

Merge Risk: External image Minimal · previous review b55a0

Preview annotations that finish after you navigate to another thread are now dropped instead of being sent from the wrong thread's draft. No remaining merge-blocking risk was found in the reviewed changes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b55a0

The change preserves read permissions and thread-scoped action controls. Status content is bounded, displayed as text and identified as advisory. No introduced security finding was established, but incomplete evidence around overlapping session changes prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The subscription exposes all live status entries in the authenticated environment to orchestration:read holders, not merely the active thread. Visible state is capped at 64 threads, 128 items overall and eight items per source. Producer-controlled status requests do not select their provider identity or thread envelope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new stream passes through authenticated WebSocket upgrade handling and group-wide scope middleware. orchestration:read is checked before its handler runs. Registry extraction retains terminal operation checks, filesystem read/write guards, preview controls and page-only pull-request checkout restrictions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A retained panel annotation callback forwards only when the latest sender still belongs to the original scoped thread. Final message sending also checks orchestration operation access and an active thread. This prevents a late annotation selection from being redirected into a newly selected thread.

🟡 Medium browser/openFileInPreview.ts:87

When isScopeCurrent becomes false while openPreview is in flight, this returns an interruption after the RPC has already created a tab, leaving the server-side preview session open without applying its snapshot or closing it. PreviewManager.open retains every session until previewClose, so repeated navigation races accumulate unseen sessions that are later reconciled as unexpected tabs. Close the newly created tab before returning the interruption, or otherwise make this path clean up the successful openPreview result.

Agreed. Once the server has opened the preview session, dropping the result left that session hidden. openUrlInPreview no longer checks the visit after openPreview resolves: the session is applied to the thread it was opened for, which never touches the thread you moved to. Work that has not asked the server yet is still dropped, and errors are still shown only to the visit that started them. Covered by "keeps a browser the server opened after the thread was left in that thread".

A cancelled rollback leaves the active thread with no statuses. t3.status_generation clears statusSource before the fork result is known, so when lifecycleRequest returns { cancelled: true } and keeps the existing session active, the still-valid header statuses have already been erased. Clear and rebind only after a successful session switch, or restore the previous source when the lifecycle request is cancelled.

No longer relevant as of 8b674726bda41687aa19842045ffbf99d8191b3a

Agreed for rollback. A cancelled fork keeps the thread on its session, so clearing its statuses was wrong. The adapter now puts back what the status generation cleared once Pi reports the cancellation. Restored keys never overwrite a status the session wrote while the hook was deciding. Covered by "puts back the session's statuses when an extension cancels a rollback".

Fixed in #16044 (commit bc0076ad2b): Open in browser now uses a lifetime keyed only by the thread, so switching the composer to a queued-message draft no longer drops it. Add to chat keeps the draft-aware lifetime. Covered by "still opens a browser after the composer switches drafts in the same thread". The PRs above carry the same commit.

Replace the standalone ContributionStatusStoreShape interface with ContributionStatusStore["Service"].

The service conventions forbid a standalone FooShape type. This module exports ContributionStatusStoreShape, and other modules use it as a public type:

  • PiAdapterV2Options.statusStore in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/PiAdapterV2.ts Line 246.
  • subscriptionStream at Line 338.
  • Test helpers in ContributionStatusRpc.test.ts and PiAdapterV2.test.ts.

To fix this:

  1. Put the interface inline in the Context.Reference generic.
  2. Point every consumer at ContributionStatusStore.ContributionStatusStore["Service"].

The exported surface gets smaller, and the module then matches the WorkspacePaths.ts reference shape.

Drop annotation sends after a route change.

PreviewView stores the annotation in its originating thread's draft before it calls onSendAnnotation. A late picker result can still call the captured callback after navigation. Plain server-thread navigation reuses the unkeyed ChatView. The old onSend closure targets the original thread through activeThread.id, but reads the reused component's live prompt and composer refs. It can send the new thread's draft to the original thread.

Guard the direct send against a route change. The annotation remains in the original thread's draft.

This is unchanged from main: main's ChatView passes the same onSend closure to PreviewView.onSendAnnotation. The panel host keeps that behavior on purpose, and the comment on it says a pick that settles after navigation still sends through the thread it started in. Dropping it on a route change is a product decision for a separate change.

@saphid Thanks for clarifying. I withdraw this finding for the panel-host refactor. The callback intentionally preserves the existing behavior. My proposed guard would change that behavior.

Any review of the live composer refs should be separate from this refactor. Would you like a follow-up issue for that review?

5Learning: In the React/TypeScript web UI, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx intentionally allows preview annotation picks that settle after navigation to invoke the originating thread's captured onSend callback through PanelHost.sendAnnotation. The panel-host refactor preserves this behavior from PreviewView.onSendAnnotation. Dropping annotation sends on route changes is a separate product decision, not a required fix for the refactor.

Declare the new store dependency in PiAdapterV2DriverEnv.

PiAdapterV2Driver.create reads ContributionStatusStore, but PiAdapterV2DriverEnv omits it. The default adapter layer also reads the store at Line 3140 while declaring that same environment type. Add the store to the declared requirements so callers can assemble either constructor from its type.

As per coding guidelines, “Dependencies come from the environment … so the types of make and layer show what they need.”

ContributionStatusStore is a Context.Reference with a no-op default (see the doc comment in apps/server/src/contributions/ContributionStatusStore.ts), so reading it adds no requirement to the environment and both constructors build without it, for example in adapter tests. The server provides the live layer once, so the WebSocket subscribers and the adapters share one store. This follows main's pattern for optional orchestration services such as ProviderContinuationRequests and ProviderTurnAnalytics, which are also References and are not listed in driver environments.

@saphid, you are correct. Context.Reference supplies a default and adds no required service to the Effect environment. I incorrectly treated ContributionStatusStore as a required Context.Service.

PiAdapterV2DriverEnv does not need to include the store. The shared live layer supplies the server implementation. I withdraw this finding.

Thanks for the clarification.

5Learning: In this TypeScript/Effect repository, apps/server/src/contributions/ContributionStatusStore.ts defines ContributionStatusStore as a Context.Reference with a no-op default. Reading it does not add a required service to the Effect environment, so apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/PiAdapterV2.ts correctly omits it from PiAdapterV2DriverEnv. The server supplies a shared live layer for adapters and WebSocket subscribers. Optional orchestration References such as ProviderContinuationRequests and ProviderTurnAnalytics follow the same pattern; do not treat them as required Context.Service dependencies.

Scope terminal launch context by environment.

When an unkeyed ChatView moves from environment A to environment B with the same threadId, activeTerminalLaunchContext can retain A's cwd and worktreePath. The registered terminal panel uses B's threadRef with those stale paths. If B has a terminal surface without an existing session, the attach path can create the B session in A's location.

Store the launch context's environmentId and require it to match before passing the context to RegisteredSidePanel.

8Add the environment identifier to TerminalLaunchContext and set it when creating

Pre-existing on main, moved unchanged by this stack: main's ChatView.tsx scopes activeTerminalLaunchContext by thread id only, and this stack keeps that line as is. Adding an environment check is a separate behaviour change, so it is out of scope here.

@saphid Thanks for clarifying. The panel replacement preserves the existing launch-context input. I withdraw this finding as a required change for this PR.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for environment-scoped terminal launch contexts?

5Learning: When reviewing TypeScript/React panel refactors in pingdotgg/t3code, distinguish inherited behavior from regressions introduced by the refactor. Moving unchanged logic from apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx into registered panels does not by itself justify requiring a separate behavior change; establish that the refactor introduces or worsens the issue before flagging it as a PR defect.

dry-run draft, no action taken.

closure is warranted under the prior approval rule. The diff introduces a contribution-status contract/store and Pi thread-header status chips, with inherited panel architecture; the PR explicitly says no maintainer agreed, and discussion #6837 contains proposals and use cases but no maintainer approval.

Agree on the Pi status channel and inherited panel scope with a maintainer, then link explicit approval for reconsideration; the missing Pi extension status feedback remains a useful report.
