fix(mobile): the send button's queue/steer menu opens after a short hold#15192

Holding the send button while a turn runs opens the Queue / Steer now menu. On iOS that menu used UIKit's long-press timing (about half a second), which felt sluggish next to native menu buttons like the filter button in Messages.

The send button now opens the menu after a 250 ms hold. That's short enough to feel like a menu button and long enough that a normal tap still sends.

  • iOS: UIKit has no public setting for how long a menu hold takes, and it ignores a programmatic presentation while its own interaction is still tracking the finger. Our @react-native-menu/menu patch adds a longPressDuration prop. It gives the button's own long-press click driver (_UIControlLongPressClickInteractionDriver) a runtime subclass whose clickDownDuration and clickTimeoutDuration return that duration. UIKit still presents its own system menu, just sooner. If those UIKit internals change, the prop does nothing and the system timing applies.
  • Android: the same duration becomes the button's delayLongPress.
  • Only the send button opts in. Thread rows and other hold menus keep the system timing.

On an iPhone 18 Pro simulator (iOS 27), native logs from touch-down to the menu's willDisplay measured about 530 ms before and about 285 ms after.

Before (left) vs after (right): the same build with the prop off and on, aligned at touch-down. The red ring marks the finger, and the counter stops when the menu starts opening. It plays at real speed, then 4× slower.

Before and after: holding the send button

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This changes the production send-menu hold default to 250 ms on Android and iOS, with a substantial native menu patch using private UIKit runtime hooks and additional menu state handling. The user-facing default and native integration warrant human review.

The menu patch adds long-press duration and interaction-start support for iOS menus. The mobile composer sets the send-action menu duration to 250 ms, and the Android menu passes its configured duration to its child.

Approval of the new timing and platform scope is still required. A cancelled iOS menu interaction may also require retrying a send tap.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e58c0

The change affects when the send menu opens, without an identified expansion of sending permissions or conversation targets. Remaining uncertainty concerns iOS gesture cancellation and compatibility across operating-system versions.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected exposure is a local mobile gesture and menu interaction feeding the existing selected environment/thread send path. The timing prop and private driver methods do not supply a new target, credential, or dispatch authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The menu remains unavailable when disabled or when no follow-up choice exists. Its identifiers come from presentation actions, while downstream code resolves effective dispatch at send time. The native event string is still cast rather than runtime-validated, but that behavior and its bounded action producer are unchanged from base.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate preparation-without-display and unmount recovery on supported iOS versions, specifically checking that a deferred press cannot cause an unintended send and that cancellation leaves no stranded suppression state. This addresses an unresolved lifecycle guarantee, not a demonstrated PR-introduced vulnerability.

The description gives detailed problem, implementation, measurement, evidence, and testing limitations. However, it does not follow the required section structure and omits the required prior-approval information for the intentional interaction timing change.

Resolution

Reorganize the description under Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification headings. Add a link to explicit maintainer approval for the 250 ms timing and its iOS/Android scope, or explain why the change qualifies for an approval exemption. Retain the before/after recording and clearly state the Android and physical-iPhone testing limitations under Verification.

Thanks for measuring and showing the Queue / Steer menu delay. The timing report is useful, and the iOS recording gives maintainers a concrete example to discuss.

Under our prior-approval rule, an intentional change to a product interaction default needs explicit maintainer approval of its direction and scope before implementation. This PR changes the busy-turn send button from UIKit's usual hold timing to a 250 ms menu threshold on iOS and Android. The PR does not link approval for that duration. The linked Queue/Steer discussion #6684 approved the follow-up capability, but does not decide this gesture timing. This is also not a focused configuration option for an existing capability: the new prop implements a changed default for this control.

A shorter hold may be the right choice, but the default and native approach need product-direction approval. Please discuss the timing and scope with maintainers in #6684 or a focused Ideas discussion; there is no need to duplicate the existing Queue/Steer request. If maintainers approve this direction, link the approval and ask for reconsideration under the closure and reconsideration guide. Under the contribution policy, the PR may be closed pending that approval. This feedback concerns eligibility, not a finding that the implementation fails.

Get maintainer approval for the 250 ms send-menu timing before merge.

This PR changes the busy-turn send button's hold default on iOS and Android. CONTRIBUTING.md requires explicit maintainer approval of the direction and scope for intentional product behavior changes, and the approval must be linked in the PR. The linked discussion #6684 approves the Queue/Steer capability, not this timing or its Android scope. Labeling the change a fix does not exempt it.

Discuss the timing and platform scope in #6684 or a focused Ideas discussion. Link the approval in this PR. If the PR is closed under the policy, request reconsideration under the closure and reconsideration guide.

🤖 GPT-6.1 Sol responding on behalf of Jake

The 250 ms default on iOS and Android still needs explicit maintainer approval. I checked the current PR conversation and #6684: the maintainer comments there confirm Queue/Steer and server-side queueing, but do not approve this hold duration or its platform scope. The earlier policy feedback therefore still applies.

CI and the CodeRabbit review are complete on bfed33bd48; that does not satisfy the product-direction gate. The implementation is unchanged and this thread remains open pending a linked maintainer decision.

@jakeleventhal Understood. Based on your update, the maintainer-approval requirement remains unmet. Completed CI and CodeRabbit review do not replace approval of the 250 ms duration and its iOS/Android scope.

This finding remains open pending a linked maintainer decision.

This PR does not meet the prior-approval requirement. ThreadComposer changes the iOS and Android send-menu default to 250 ms, and the author confirms discussion 6684 does not approve that timing

Obtain explicit maintainer approval for the 250 ms default and native implementation in the existing Queue/Steer discussion, then link it here. Please link the resulting evidence and request reconsideration under the closure and reconsideration guide.

This is an unexecuted dry-run draft.

Reopening. An automated triage pass closed this by mistake; the closing comment above does not apply. Sorry for the noise.

Thanks for this, @jakeleventhal. We're closing it as part of picking native changes for the next mobile release, and we aren't taking it in this round:

  • It depends on a private UIKit class. The shorter hold works by subclassing _UIControlLongPressClickInteractionDriver at runtime. That's an internal UIKit class, so it can break or attract App Store review attention in a native build we can't fix over the air. That's a lot of risk for saving about a quarter second on one button.
  • It's out of date with main. #31168 just rewrote the same @react-native-menu/menu patch, so this branch now conflicts in the patch file and pnpm-lock.yaml.

If you still want the faster send-button menu, please open a fresh PR from current main instead of reopening this one. If iOS gains a public way to set the hold duration, that would be the ideal route; otherwise please note the private-API risk in the PR and include testing on a physical iPhone and Android.
