fix(web): mod+enter starts a new thread in the background again#15060

mod+Enter on a new thread stopped starting it in the background. The V2 merge moved that action to mod+Alt+Enter, and the server wrote the new key into every user's keybindings.json, so changing the default alone would not reach existing installs.

mod+Enter is now a default for Composer: Start in Background again, next to mod+Alt+Enter. Both keys stay because, after #15050, mod+Alt+Enter means "send and open a fresh composer" on any thread.

Startup sync skips commands a config already has. So startup now adds the new rule once, next to an untouched mod+Alt+Enter default, if its shortcut is still free. Customized setups are left alone. It records this in a small keybindings-migrations file next to keybindings.json. If a user removes the rule later, it stays removed.

Verified with focused tests, including one that fails without the run-once marker. A copy of a real keybindings.json from a V2 install picked up mod+Enter. On macOS and Linux, mod+Enter and mod+Alt+Enter on a draft both start in background. On an existing thread, mod+Alt+Enter sends and opens a new thread, and mod+Enter still sends normally (or does the opposite queue/steer while running). Lint and typecheck pass for server, web, and shared.

Reviewed with sol-loop: 2 rounds with GPT-6.1 Sol on high, before the rebase onto #15050 changed the migration from replacing mod+Alt+Enter to adding mod+Enter.

When the config is already at MAX_KEYBINDINGS_COUNT, defaultsToAppend omits mod+enter, but recordAppliedMigrations still marks every pending migration as applied. A later removal creates capacity, yet the migration is skipped permanently, so composer.sendBackground never receives mod+enter. Record only migrations whose rules were actually appended.

Fixed in dbec31ef42. Startup now records only late defaults that were added or not needed. A late default skipped at MAX_KEYBINDINGS_COUNT stays pending and is added on a later start once there is room. New test keeps a late default pending while the config is full covers it and fails without the fix.

Startup appends a late default even when the user's existing binding occupies the same semantic shortcut context, so reverse-order runtime resolution lets the default silently override the user's shortcut. The check at 558 relies on raw when string equality; expressions such as composerFocus && (draftThreadRoute) are equivalent but compare differently, and the migration marker then makes the override persistent. Compare normalized/parsed conditions before appending the late default.

Partly agree. Fixed the related gap in 751d615: the late default now joins only a config that still has the untouched mod+alt+enter default. Customized Start in Background setups are left alone. New test leaves a customized command without the late default.

Not changing the when comparison. The check is the same hasSameShortcutContext that every default backfill uses, so this rule follows the existing conflict policy. A user who keeps the stock default and also has a separate mod+enter rule with a reworded but equal when is a very narrow case. Normalizing when expressions would change shared backfill behavior beyond this fix. If it happens, removing the added rule in Settings keeps it removed.

Walkthrough

The composer now maps unmodified Mod+Enter to background sending in draft threads. Server startup sync applies this late default to eligible existing keybinding configurations, tracks migration IDs, and defers the shortcut when the configuration is full. Tests and documentation reflect the change.

Skip the late default when an existing binding matches the draft context.

hasSameShortcutContext compares when strings exactly. A user’s Mod+Enter rule with when: "composerFocus" therefore does not block the late rule. If startup sync finds the retained alongside rule and has room to append, it adds composer.sendBackground after the user’s rule. On a focused draft composer, both conditions match, and reverse-order dispatch selects the appended rule. Check for overlapping contexts before adding the late default.

Treat only a missing migration file as an empty set.

A typed readFileString failure becomes an empty migration-ID set. If the valid config still contains the original mod+alt+enter rule, leaves mod+enter free, and has room for another rule, startup can treat the migration as pending and persist the binding the user removed. Map only SystemError with reason === "NotFound" to an empty set; propagate other read errors.
