Problem

Closing the inline right panel (Files, Diff, Terminal, Browser…) leaves keyboard interaction behind in it. If focus was inside the panel, it falls to the page body, so the next Tab starts from the top of the page. While the panel animates closed, its hidden controls also stay tabbable: pointer-events-none stops the mouse but not the keyboard.

This is a small, obvious accessibility fix (CONTRIBUTING's small-bug route): keyboard reach should follow the panel's visible open state. There's no linked issue or prior maintainer sign-off.

Change

  • PreviewPanelShell: a closed, collapsible inline shell becomes inert. If focus is inside it at that moment, focus first moves to the existing Toggle right panel button. When the shell unmounts (after the animation, or straight away at 0 ms), the toggle remounts in the header; if that left focus on the page body, focus goes back to the toggle. Focus that is already outside the panel is not moved.
  • PanelLayoutControls: the toggle gets a data-right-panel-toggle hook so the shell can find it.

Sheet, sidebar, embedded and non-collapsible inline panels are unchanged. An earlier revision also closed the Add panel surface menu on collapse. Main now does that itself (#15686), so that part and its tests were removed after merging main.

Verification (head dd1a084770, base 11fd54fcbb)

  • Merged current main (11fd54fcbb) with a merge commit. Git merged PreviewPanelShell.tsx without conflicts. One semantic conflict was fixed: the shell test passed a PanelLayoutControls prop that main removed.
  • vp test run apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewPanelShell.a11y.test.tsx apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewPanelShell.test.ts apps/web/src/components/RightPanelTabs.keyboard.test.tsx apps/web/src/components/RightPanelTabs.test.tsx: 4 files, 46 passed. The shell tests cover collapsed controls being skipped and restored on reopen, focus returned at 0 ms and after the animation, focus moved outside during the animation, and the unchanged modes. Main's keyboard tests cover the menu closing on collapse.
  • vp run typecheck in apps/web: exit 0. vp lint on the changed files: exit 0.
  • Independent review: GPT-6.1 Sol (high) in Codex via T3 Code, two rounds. Round 1 confirmed the narrowing and merge. Its two follow-ups are recorded under limitations below: focus on the Add-panel trigger, and a focused toggle relocating. I tried a fix for both. Round 2 showed it would steal focus after a timeline click and miss ChatView's real unmount order, so I reverted it (dd1a084770) rather than add focus-tracking machinery.

UI evidence (recorded at the earlier head 56a2469f15 on main 8fb068c498)

The shell code shown here is unchanged at this head. macOS 26.5 arm64, local web client (vp run dev) in headless Chromium 153 at 1440×1000, with fresh isolated app state and a fixture project. The panel animation duration was set through Settings → Appearance, to 400 ms and to 0 ms. Caption bands were added after capture from read-only document.activeElement samples.

Focus inside the panel, close with Cmd+Option+B (400 ms): focus the Files tab, close, then wait until the panel has unmounted plus two frames.

Recordings, full speed with no trim: before MP4 · after MP4. Full settled screenshots: before · after.

The same flow at 0 ms (immediate removal): before BODY, after BUTTON "Toggle right panel". Screenshots: before · after.

Focus outside the panel (Message composer): after closing, focus is still on Message.

Hidden controls during the closing animation: the real client shows the closing shell with inert=false before and inert=true after. A single Tab from the composer reached the model picker in both revisions, because the panel comes later in tab order, so the real client did not show a Tab landing in the panel. The behavior test covers this case: with the panel collapsed, Tab into the scope skips its controls, and reopening makes them reachable again.

Hidden controls during the closing animation: the real client shows the closing shell with inert=false before and inert=true after. A single Tab from the composer reached the model picker in both revisions, because the panel comes later in tab order. The behaviour test covers the Tab case.

Surfaces

  • Web: fixed in chat threads and on the pull requests page, which share PreviewPanelShell and PanelLayoutControls.
  • Desktop: same web components. Not run in Electron, and native browser-view focus wasn't checked.
  • Mobile: not affected. React Native has its own navigation.
  • Local / remote-relay / tunnel and providers: not affected. The change is client-side DOM focus only.
  • Entry points: it reacts to the panel's open state, so it applies whether the panel is closed by the shortcut, the toggle or a store-driven close.

Known limitations (unchanged from main)

  • If keyboard focus is on the Add panel surface button or inside its open menu when the panel closes, focus still falls to the page body. Main removes the menu and its trigger as soon as the panel closes.
  • If the toggle itself closes the panel and then relocates into the header, focus falls to the page body.
  • Reopening with the shortcut leaves focus on the page body, because the toggle remounts again.
  • Not checked: Electron, native screen readers, remote/relay or tunnel.

Implementation: Claude Code (exact Claude model not recorded). Earlier review and capture: GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra via T3 Code. Merge with main, narrowing and body refresh: Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code) via T3 Code; review GPT-6.1 Sol.

🟡 Medium preview/PreviewPanelShell.tsx:121

Collapsing the panel leaves the open Add panel surface menu focusable and operable, so its actions remain available while the right panel is hidden. inert only covers this shell's descendants; MenuPrimitive.Portal renders the menu outside it, and rightPanel.toggle does not reset addSurfaceMenuOpen. Close portaled overlays when open becomes false or include them in the inert scope.

3Collapsing the panel leaves the open Add panel surface menu focusable and operable, so its actions remain available while the right panel is hidden. `inert` only covers this shell's descendants; `MenuPrimitive.Portal` renders the menu outside it, and `rightPanel.toggle` does not reset `addSurfaceMenuOpen`. Close portaled overlays when `open` becomes false or include them in the inert scope.

Fixed since this comment: RightPanelTabs now closes the Add panel menu when the inline panel collapses (open === false), so the portaled menu can no longer be focused or operated while the panel is hidden. PreviewPanelShell.a11y.test.tsx → "collapsed panel portaled menu" covers it: the menu closes on collapse and does not reopen with the panel. Real-client capture is in the PR body.

Update: main now covers this. #15686 (7202ba6660) closes the Add panel menu whenever open === false and only renders it while the panel is open. This PR's own guard and its tests were removed in 1ae51a5afd after merging main, so the portaled menu is handled by main's code.

Restore focus when the inline panel closes.

When focus remains on a panel descendant and the rightPanel.toggle shortcut closes the panel, PreviewPanelShell makes that descendant inert. The close path does not move focus to the right-panel toggle or another reachable control. Focus can therefore be cleared to body, leaving keyboard users without a useful destination.

Restore focus to the existing right-panel toggle when open changes from true to false and the active element is inside the panel.

Require page focus before restoring focus.

When browser focus is outside the page and activeElement is body, the unmount cleanup can focus the toggle. returnedFocus.current remains true after the collapse focus transfer, so this path can take focus from browser chrome.

Thanks — leaving this as is. The cleanup only calls focus() when the active element is body and the user had just been moved to the toggle by the collapse. When the window is not focused, HTMLElement.focus() only updates the document's active element; it does not take OS or browser-chrome focus, so there is nothing to steal. Adding hasFocus() would instead skip restoring the toggle for a user who switches windows mid-collapse and returns.

@saphid Thanks for the clarification. I withdraw this finding. I incorrectly treated a document active-element change as taking browser-chrome or OS focus.

Adding hasFocus() could skip the intended toggle restoration when the user switches windows during collapse. No change is needed for this finding.

Rebased onto current main. Replies to the review notes that have no inline thread:

  • CodeRabbit outside-diff finding (restore focus when the inline panel closes): fixed. When focus is inside the closing panel, it moves to "Toggle right panel" before the panel goes inert, and stays there after the panel unmounts, with or without the closing animation. Focus already outside the panel is not moved. The three focus tests in PreviewPanelShell.a11y.test.tsx fail on current main and pass on this head.
  • Correction to my earlier Macroscope reply: the test for the portaled Add panel menu is in RightPanelTabs.a11y.test.tsx ("closes the menu on collapse and does not reopen it with the panel"), not PreviewPanelShell.a11y.test.tsx. It fails on main and passes here.
  • Docstring coverage warning: not adopted. The change adds two layout effects and one render-time guard, each with a short comment on the non-obvious ordering. The repository's AGENTS.md asks for comments that describe how a thing is used rather than blanket docstrings.
  • Merge-risk note about focus after moving to browser controls: this repeats the hasFocus() thread, which CodeRabbit withdrew. focus() in a background window only updates the document's active element; it cannot take browser or OS focus.

@coderabbitai: about the outside-diff finding Restore focus when the inline panel closes (PreviewPanelShell.tsx:121). It's addressed in this PR. When the collapsible panel closes with focus on one of its descendants, the shell moves focus to the right-panel toggle before setting inert. If the toggle relocates when the shell unmounts, it restores focus there. PreviewPanelShell.a11y.test.tsx covers 0 ms and animated closes and focus that has already moved outside. Still at head dd1a084770.

@saphid Confirmed by code inspection at dd1a084770. The outside-diff finding “Restore focus when the inline panel closes” is addressed.

The shell moves focus to the right-panel toggle before setting inert. After unmount, it restores focus to the relocated toggle only if focus has fallen to body.

The tests cover immediate removal, animated-close toggle relocation, and preserving focus outside the panel. I did not run the tests.
