The composer used separate editing engines, and switching modes could change drafts or editing behavior. This uses Tiptap for both modes, with rich text enabled by default for inline formatting and task checkboxes. Users can opt out in Settings → General → Rich text composer; explicit saved opt-outs remain off.

Plain mode keeps markdown literal. Rich mode preserves chip sources, task spacing, nesting, clipboard selections, undo, and caret positions while rendering formatting. Task splits use native editor operations so formatting survives. Rich mode canonicalizes equivalent delimiters (__ to **, _ to *, [X] to [x]).

The takeover removes unused mapping and serialization helpers, shares serialization with marker decorations, and bounds inline parsing depth. Fixes cover nested/overlapping marks, marks spanning chips, paste boundaries, citation timing, selection copying, task splitting, whitespace, IME guards, and chip HTML serialization.

Validation:

  • Default-on follow-up: 201 document/settings tests, web/contracts typechecks, and scoped lint passed on Blacksmith. Browser verified missing preference → on, explicit off surviving reload, and reset → on.
  • Blacksmith: all eight focused composer/settings test files passed; parser/document/list run passed 83 tests, followed by 70 document tests after the final code-span whitespace fix, including boundary-whitespace and coordinate cases.
  • Web and contracts typechecks passed; scoped editor/parser/document lint and unused-export checks passed.
  • Real web client connected remotely to an isolated server and Codex: plain and rich prompts sent successfully, including a typed/toggled task checkbox.
  • Browser checks covered switching modes with the same draft, nested tasks, file-chip paste/copy, undo, bold task splitting, partial task copy, marked trailing whitespace, native chip clipboard HTML, restoring the caret while the terminal owns focus, and punctuation wrapping with chip protection, and citation comment insertion/save through the app callback.
  • Desktop-sized dark mode and 390px light responsive web inspected. Native Electron/mobile clients and other providers were not exercised.

Before switching the setting on, with the same draft:

plain composer with literal markers and file chip

After switching on, with the same draft selected:

rich composer with nested task checkboxes and selected file chip

Typing a task, toggling it, sending it, and receiving the real Codex response:

typed checkbox toggled and sent to codex

Switching modes without losing the draft:

plain draft preserved when rich text is enabled

Opting out and restoring the enabled default:

rich text opt-out and reset to enabled default

The setting description fits on one line at 1280px and 390px. Scoped Blacksmith lint passed (existing warnings only).

rich text setting description before shortening

Both independent final reviewers approve d6d6b70857619877a51ef9371e7a5e17c1d08bbd.

Takeover and verification: gpt-6-astra in Codex, on behalf of Maria.

Task serialization silently rewrites valid whitespace: - [ ] item becomes - [ ] item, leading spaces after the checkbox are collapsed, and - [ ]\n - [ ] child becomes - [ ] \n - [ ] child. parseTaskPrefix accepts and then discards these separators, while this reconstruction always emits one space and treats nested children as nonempty; preserve the parsed marker/content whitespace (or store it in task attributes) so only checkbox case is normalized.

Preserve the caret's logical position when indenting. When a collapsed Tab selection is on a list line, ChatComposer.tsx applies the insertion at line.start. replaceTextRange sets the cursor to safeStart + replacement.length, and applyPromptReplacement passes that value to focusAt. For "- foo" with the caret at offset 5, this moves the caret to offset 2, before the marker, instead of offset 7 after the same logical character. Shift the original caret by the inserted two spaces, or restore it after applying the edit.

apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx:813-815 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject inherited SURROUND_CLOSE keys before inserting text.

When a non-empty plain-text selection receives multi-character input such as constructor, SURROUND_CLOSE[text] resolves Object.prototype.constructor. The guard accepts the function. Transaction.insertText passes it to Schema.text, which constructs a TextNode without a runtime type check. The transaction therefore can contain a function as text instead of safely rejecting the value. It does not necessarily throw at insertText itself.

Use an own-property check.

Mounting with a nonzero cursor leaves the ProseMirror caret at the document start, so the first typing or paste edits the beginning of the prompt instead of the supplied position. Because snapshotRef is pre-seeded with the same value and cursor, this equality check exits before setTextSelection, while the editor's default selection is still at the start. Apply the initial controlled selection explicitly rather than treating the seeded snapshot as proof that it has been applied.

the configured send shortcut must keep sending in both composer modes. with Enter configured to send, Shift+Enter inserts/splits a task; with a multiline send setting, Enter splits it. native task splitting runs only after menu and submission handling intentionally. the browser verified both sending a task and Shift+Enter splitting bold task content.

Handle unmodified task-item Enter before submission.

onComposerCommandKey evaluates submissionIntent before the isTaskItem bypass. The submission helper permits plain desktop Enter to return "foreground" when the configured shortcut allows it. The Tiptap caller performs native task splitting only when the handler returns false. Therefore, task-item Enter can submit instead of splitting.

Move the unmodified task-item check before submission handling. Keep modifier-based send shortcuts available.
