# Organizations

An organization owns repositories on behalf of a group of people, with shared
roles, [teams](https://git.cafe/docs/organizations/teams.md), [rulesets](https://git.cafe/docs/organizations/organization-settings.md#rulesets) and
[billing](https://git.cafe/docs/account/billing.md). Every account also has a personal namespace
with the same handle as the user.

## Create an organization

1. Open the account menu at the bottom of the sidebar and choose **New
   organization**, or go to `/orgs/new`.
2. Enter a display name. A handle is suggested from it; handles are 1 to 39
   lowercase letters, digits or single hyphens, with no hyphen at either end.
3. Create the organization. You become its owner.

```sh
cafe org create acme --name "Acme"
```

## Find your organizations

Organizations you belong to are listed in the account menu. The organization
page, `/orgs/<handle>`, has these tabs:

- **Repositories**: the organization's profile and every repository you can see.
- **Members** and **Teams**: see [members](https://git.cafe/docs/organizations/organization-members.md) and
  [teams](https://git.cafe/docs/organizations/teams.md).
- **Settings**: for owners and admins; see
  [organization settings](https://git.cafe/docs/organizations/organization-settings.md).

Only members can open the organization page. Everyone can see its public
profile and public repositories at `/<handle>`.
