Let a newer page switch, or a deletion, win while the next page is read

Reading the next page before leaving the current one added a wait in
which other things can happen. A newer switch started meanwhile now
keeps the page it asked for: the older one gives way without touching
the newer one's transition. A teammate deleting the page on screen
during the read is caught by checking again before leaving it, so the
user is told about work only it holds. A switch that stays put resumes
the server update it held back, as every other way out of a switch does.
