"Set as default" wrote the preferences record straight to Hive. The
preferences notifier still held the record it read at startup, and every
later preference change wrote that whole record back, so changing pen
color, sort order, autosave or any other setting in the same session put
the old default theme back. The theme setter now writes through the
notifier.
