Organizations
An organization is a shared owner for repositories. Every account also has a personal organization with the same handle as the user.
Creating one
Open the account menu (bottom of the sidebar) and choose New organization,
or go to /orgs/new. Enter a display name; a handle is suggested from it and
can be edited. Handles are 1-39 lowercase letters, digits, or single hyphens, with no leading
or trailing hyphen.
On success you land on the organization page. You must be signed in.
Organization page
/orgs/<handle> shows the organization's name, handle, and a tab bar:
- Repositories (the default): the organization's profile header (avatar, name, description, company, location, website, as set in settings) above every repository in the organization you can see, with visibility and default branch.
- Members and Teams: shown for non-personal organizations. See organization-members.md.
- Settings: shown only to owners and admins. See organization-settings.md.
Only members can open an organization page; everyone else sees the request failure. Organizations you belong to are listed in the account menu, with their avatars, for quick switching.
